July 14th: Laura Ingalls Wilder (WI) and Badlands (SD) Loops + Driftless Challenge

This weeks routes are 2 more amazing rides:

Laura Ingalls Wilder Route (WI)

Fans of Little House on the Prairie will enjoy this route which includes Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthplace and explores the area depicted in the first of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, Little House in the Big Woods. Geographically, this route is located West of the Chippewa River between Pepin and Menomonie in Western Wisconsin.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Route is located in the hills and valleys along the western shore of the Chippewa river between Menomonie, WI and the Mississippi River. These hills and valleys provide fun roads with lots of twists and turns. The hilltops also provide excellent vistas of the surrounding countryside. The L.I.W. route also approaches the Chippewa river in several places and nears the Mississippi River in Pepin, Wisconsin.

There are many points of interest along this route, including the Devil’s Punchbowl, Riverside Park and Waterfall near Menomonie, the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum in Pepin, the UFO Capital of Wisconsin in Elmwood, and the Mailman Haunted Castle in Elk Mound. The route also provides access to Wisconsin Rustic Roads #51 and #89. Travel in the footsteps of one of America’s favorite authors and experience the Laura Ingalls Wilder Route!

This route starts in Wall, South Dakota and heads South and East through Badlands National Park. There are many places to pull off and view the scenery or hike on this part of the ride.

The next leg of this ride heads back East across the prairies to the town of Scenic. From there you will turn South for a stop at the Wounded Knee Cemetery and Massacre Monument.

More riding across the prairie brings you back to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and the park exit. After exiting Badlands National Park, this route takes you to the Minuteman Missile Visitors Center before returning to Wall.
